Abstract
Vocabulary is an important part of learning a foreign language that must be mastered well by students because it is an important factor that support students’ learning ability in doing communication. Students who have problems in vocabulary will be agitated in understanding the English lessons. The objectives of the research are: (1) To find out the students’ problems in mastering vocabulary in an Islamic private school in Kudus. (2) To find out how students overcome problems related to vocabulary mastery in an Islamic private school in Kudus. A reason for choosing this place because the problem to be studied was in that location, and the researcher also came from the area and was quite aware of the conditions of educational development in the area that was used as the research objectives. This study used a qualitative research design. In collecting data, the researcher used observation, interviews, and documentation. Then the data were analyzed used data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher concludes that: 1) the problems that experienced by the students in mastering vocabulary are problems in pronouncing the words, problems in spelling the words, problems in deciding the words meaning, problems in using word appropriately, lack of students learning motivation, lazy in memorizing vocabulary, and lack of learning facilities. 2) several ways that students used to overcome problems in mastering vocabulary are using dictionary, practice with friends, making a note, searching in internet, listening songs and watching movies in English.
